Beowulf and the Hero’s Journey

Joseph Campbell’s term monomyth can be depicted as a hero’s venture. Numerous brave characters follow the monomyth, regardless of the timeframe or culture the writing was made in. The sonnet Beowulf is known to follow the experience of the saint depicted in Campbell’s monomyth . The hero’s venture comprises of three rituals of sections: division, inception, and return. Beowulf bears every one of these phases all through the epic sonnet, so his excursion follows Campbell’s monomyth. The partition is the principal stage a legend must experience in their excursion. This stage comprises of â€Å"a screw up - evidently the merest possibility uncovers an unsuspected world, and the individual is brought into a relationship with powers that are not properly comprehended. † (42) This is known as the hero’s call to experience. In Beowulf, Beowulf â€Å"heard how Grendel filled evenings with repulsiveness and immediately instructed a pontoon fitted out. † (197-98) Beowulf couldn’t remain away when he heard that help was incredibly required vanquishing Grendel; he collected his men immediately and delivered off to Denmark. The following stage is the refusal to call. Beowulf doesn't decline to go on this experience on account of his respect. He accepts he is the most grounded Geat and can vanquish anything. Following this progression is otherworldly guide. Powerful guide â€Å"provides the globe-trotter with ornaments against the mythical serpent powers he is going to pass. † (Campbell 57) In Beowulf the assistance can be viewed as God. Beowulf regularly expresses gratitude toward God for helping him on his excursion. For example, â€Å"He depended on for help on the Lord of All, on His consideration and favor. † (1271-72) The last stage in partition is the intersection of the limit. For this situation the edge can be viewed as the sea. Beowulf and his group needed to cross the sea so as to come to Denmark to murder Grendel. At the point when they show up in Denmark they are fundamentally beginning their experience right at that point, vowing to attempt to secure. The second soul changing experience in the monomyth is commencement. â€Å" The saint moves in a fantasy scene or inquisitively liquid, vague structures, where he should endure a progression of preliminaries. † (Campbell 81) This is known as the street of preliminaries. Beowulf is tried when Grendel’s mother fights back to her son’s demise. She lashes out and executes Hrothgar’s best man. At that point, Beowulf goes down into her cavern where he duels her. He almost loses his life when the two his blade and defensive layer bomb him. â€Å"No blade could cut her malevolent skin , that Hrunting couldn't hurt her, was futile now when he required it. † (1521-24) He took a supernatural blade that was holding tight her divider and slaughtered her with it. Beowulf’s partners in this stage would be the blade and God. Without the blade he would not have been to slaughter Grendel’s mother. Beowulf depends on God’s help and regularly gives Him thanks after a fight is finished. The following stage in his excursion is the peak or last fight. Subsequent to vanquishing Grendel’s mother, Beowulf comes back to his old neighborhood where he rules as ruler for a long time. He is a decent lord, keeping harmony in his nation. Following fifty years of harmony, a fire-breathing mythical serpent is awoken, so he should go ensure his kin. Beowulf and his warriors adventure out to the dragon’s den. He goes in alone, certain that he can vanquish the mammoth. He is tragically mixed up; Beowulf’s protection begins to liquefy and his blade crushes against the dragon‘s layered spirit. He was left there to bite the dust when the entirety of his kindred warriors fled fearful into the forested areas. Just one valiant fighter remained: Wiglaf. The last stage in commencement is the hero’s flight. This story’s flight is Wiglaf sparing Beowulf. Wiglaf runs into the dragon’s home with respect saying, â€Å"I’d preferably consume myself over observe flares twirling around my master. † (2651-52) Wiglaf vanquished the beast, however couldn’t spare Beowulf. One of the dragon’s tusks have been wounded into his neck, making it difficult to spare him. As death encompassed Beowulf, he made Wiglaf the new leader of the Geats. This was the last stage in the inception of Beowulf’s venture The last soul changing experience is the arrival. The arrival is the finish of the hero’s experience. Campells states, â€Å"his return is depicted as returning out of the there zone. † (188) When Beowulf bites the dust, harmony is lost in his nation. His nation eventually comes back to battling and war. The end is actually the start for another ruler, Wiglaf, and another timeframe of battling. The last piece of the hero’s venture is the remedy. A mixture is something the saint acquired during his excursion that can be imparted to society. It frequently characterizes the hero’s job in the general public. Beowulf’s solution could be viewed as his story. Beowulf carried knowledge to his kin and to the Danes that one can crush devils and get recovery. He gave them this when he vanquished both Grendel and his mom and fought the mythical serpent. Also, Beowulf’s gift of harmony could be viewed as the mixture. While he was in rule, his property was sheltered. He saved harmony for his kin. Beowulf obtained this harmony by crushing Grendel and demonstrating that he was solid. The last transitional experience in the hero’s venture is fundamentally simply returning back to the start, or where the saint was at before his experience began. Beowulf is an extraordinary case of Campbell’s monomyth. â€Å"The standard way of the legendary experience of the saint is an amplification of the recipe spoke to in the transitional experiences: division †inception †return: which may be named the atomic unit of the monomyth. (Campbell 23) Beowulf’s venture follows every one of these sections. Initially, is the partition. Beowulf starts his excursion here and routs Grendel. Next, is the inception. Beowulf routs Grendel’s mother, becomes lord of the Geats, and fights the mythical serpent in this stage. At last, is the arrival. After he passes on, harmony is lost. The land he once administered comes back to a place that i s known for war and battling. Despite the fact that Beowulf doesn't actually follow the hero’s venture, he follows the primary concerns Campbell makes in his monomyth. All in all, Beowulf follows the monomyth on his experience.

Group 1 Essays - Mountain Dew, Fauna Of Africa, Food And Drink

Group 1 Essays - Mountain Dew, Fauna Of Africa, Food And Drink Group 1 Professor Huang MKTG322-002 October 24, 2013 Mountain Dew Case Analysis After carefully analyzing the five potential creative spots and storyboards presented to the PepsiCo managers by Bruce and Cassar, we felt " Cheetah, " " Showstopper, " and " Dew or Die " should be developed for best embodying the company's brand attitude. We reached our decision by considering Mountain Dew's previous ad campaign successes, which capitalized on popular trends amongst teens and young adults, such as extreme sports and memorable music. We realize the importance of staying ten steps ahead of the game to create something that will rejuvenate the brand, since it is a common occurrence that a campaign can lose traction in the marketplace by becoming overly exposed and tiresome to the consumers. The following paper details our analyses of Cheetah, Showstopper, and Dew or Die and why we believe these are the top three creative spots that should be developed and aired throughout 2000. As the market research explains, Mountain Dew's target market is predominantly male teens, and already established consumers consisting of males between the ages of 20-39 years old already brand loyal to Mountain Dew. However, PepsiCo managers are especially interested in the teen segment as it is during these years that consumers make the transition from experimenting with a variety of soft drinks to establishing brand loyalty with a single soft drink. One of the biggest goals for the PepsiCo managers is that their ad will resonate with their target audience and, in turn increase their consumer base. It is important that the message the marketer is trying to sell to the consumer be received in the intended manner. Therefore, by satisfying their target audience's wants and needs, the "Cheetah" ad will adhere to the brand managers ' desired impact. In the "Cheetah" ad, you see a young 20-something year old chasing down a cheetah on a bicycle to retrieve his Mountain Dew from the cheetah. Next, the 20-something year old reaches in the cheetah's mouth, down to his stomach and pulls out the can of Mountain Dew. This spot will appeal to a younger audience due to the age of the actors and the extreme sports taking place during its entirety. The ad expresses the thought that consumers would be willing to travel great distances and brave extraordinary measures in order to be able to get their hands on a Mountain Dew. This is shown through the location of the commercial, the African plains, and by chasing the fastest feline in the world to get back the stolen can of soda. Teens want excitement, thrills, adventure, and they like the risk of danger. The appeal of Thanatos' (the death wish) is extremely effective in marketing to teens because it incorporates all of these things that teens want. This appeal is also very apparent in the "Cheetah" ad as chasing down a cheetah, tackling it, and reaching into its mouth is an extremely dangerous thing to do. In addition to this appeal, the inclusion of the "Dew Dude" chasing the cheetah on his bike and his friends watching nearby on their bikes incorporates the coolness of extreme sports and the thrill of adventure. It also incorporates humor, which resonates with teens well, with the lines "bad, cheetah, bad!" and "see, this is why I'm not a cat person." With the use of Thanatos, extreme sports, and humor, this ad is a great expression of drinking Mountain Dew becoming that exhilarating experience for the consumer. "Cheetah" demonstrates that Mountain Dew not only can motivate you to accomplish the impossible and that you are cool while doing it. This ad is also expresses that the taste of Mountain Dew is worth extreme risk and danger; you would chase down a cheetah to get some delicious Mountain Dew, and that would not be the case but for brands like Sprite or Coke. In addition to clearly marketing these messages, the ad also markets the product well. The can of Mountain Dew is featured in multiple instances with vibrant close-ups. Ending the ad with the slogan "Do the Dew" is another great integration of the product as well as a reminder to the audience. Mountain Dew

The reasons that lead Middle Eastern students to study outside their Research Paper

The reasons that lead Middle Eastern students to study outside their country - Research Paper Example I had an opportunity to interview some of the students and this is how they responded. The first said, â€Å"U.S has the best universities in the world and I wish to get a job and stay in the U.S. The other student responded by saying that â€Å"I choose to study abroad especially in U.S because I want to improve my English language skills.† The last student responded, saying, â€Å"Because I want to study a particular major that is not offered by our school back home.† This was a face to face discussion with the students. Apart from the above mentioned reasons, there are others reasons too that make these students to study outside their country. The University of Texas at Austin lists different reasons why students study abroad. â€Å"You will get to know another culture first-hand. Personally experiencing another country will allow you to expand your understanding of its culture beyond the surface-level differences in food, language, and appearances.† (University of Texas 1) The website indicates that the students who study abroad choose to do so since it gives them a chance to experience many challenges and gain new experience. It also argues that the students who study abroad have the chances to make new friends and contacts around the world. They also get an opportunity to meet other international students. (University of Texas 1) A survey conducted by four researchers, Anne West, Apostolis Dimitropoulos, Audrey Hind and John Wilkes indicated different reasons why students study outside their countries. They conducted a face to face dialogue with the students and the responses varied. This information is in the education-line database. Some students in the questionnaire said that they wanted to study abroad to improve their chances of being employed. Others argued that they just studied for fun. Others said that they wanted to study abroad particularly in the US and UK because they believed the

Wal-Marts Marketplace Clout Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Wal-Marts Marketplace Clout - Essay Example It is evidently clear from the discussion that Wal-Mart’s marketplace clout is tremendous. It controls about 30 percent of the household’s staples market. It sells 15 percent of all magazines and 15-20 percent of all CDs, DVDs, and videos. It is expected to soon control over 35 percent of U.S food sales. Wal-Mart has risen to dominate the retail market through the bargain prices it offers to consumers. Due to its cost efficiencies, it has attained and the pressure it places on suppliers make it affordable to give customers products at low prices. As much as Wal-Mart offers low prices, not everyone loves it. It also has charges that criticize the retail behemoth. One, Wal-Mart’s buying power and cost-saving efficiencies force local rivals out of business, in turn disrupting local communities, costing jobs and injuring established business districts. Second, Wal-Mart pays low wages and is staunchly anti-union. Its labor cost is 20 percent lower than that of unioniz ed supermarkets. Moreover, its hard-line on costs has forced many factories to move overseas, resulting in sacrificing American jobs and thus, holds wages down. Government welfare program subsidizes Wal-Mart’s poverty level wages. One congressional report shows that a two hundred employee store costs the government a fortune that is: housing assistance, children healthcare, and tax credits are paid by the government. Lastly, as Wal-Mart grows and its competitors fall by the wayside, consumer’s choice narrows and the retail exert even greater power as a cultural censor. For instance; Wal-Mart won’t carry computer games and music with the mature rating. Therefore, the big music companies supply it with sanitized versions of explicit CDs that they supply to the radio stations, and that are sold elsewhere. The retailer has also removed racy magazines, such as FHM and Maxim, from its racks and it obscures the cover of Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and Redbook.

Researched on magazines Essay Example for Free

Researched on magazines Essay My magazine is called Flava and it is aimed at teenagers, as when I researched on magazines I found this one was quite popular. I spent 4 weeks on my magazine and put a lot of effort into it. Before I started to produce my magazine I planned out how I was going to set it out and what type of things I was going to include in it. I chose the above features, as they are the basic things included in a teenage magazine. I used Microsoft Publisher for the majority of it but I also used Microsoft word for things such as my real life stories. I found Publisher better because you get a wide variety of different backgrounds and formats whereas in Microsoft Word it is more basic. I used a number of different formats and fonts. I did a lot of research on the Internet using Yahoo and Google. I worked with another pupil in my class, Khiley Williams, and we both came up with our own ideas. The pages I produced was the, Dear Angel problem page, the album review of Christina Aguileras Stripped, dish of the day page, the real life story of How I coped with Anorexia, the front cover, the celebrity page (all the celebs dressed in black), and the whats hot and whats not page. The page which required the most research was the real life story but I also put a lot of effort into the front cover as I wanted to make it eye catching and interesting. I used Christina Aguilera on my front cover as she is hot and sexy and catches peoples eye as they look at the magazine. She is also a role model for a lot of young people so they would want to read anything that they see her on. The front of my magazine is bright pink as this also helps to draw peoples attention to it and would hopefully be intrigued as to what is inside it once they start looking over the cover. I used the band Busteds logo on my front cover as well as there is a feature on them inside the magazine. To get the logo I went onto the Official Busted website, www. busted. com, and had to cut, copy and paste it onto publisher. I then had to fill in its original red background with pink to match the background of my front cover. Also on the front cover, I have included the price, a barcode and a logo, Girls with taste get Flava. For my barcode I used the search engine Google and typed in barcodes. I found one and cut copied and pasted again.

The Has Been And The Never Was :: essays research papers

The Has Been and The Never Was   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This is the story of two very different individuals who, up until a certain point, could have been called The Has Been and The Never Was. They are both successful actors who pursued slightly different paths to fame. When the two were cast together in the same movie, their performances were nothing short of spectacular. They proved to all of Hollywood that they were A-list, bankable Talent, and deserved the professional respect accorded to people of this caliber. The movie that they appeared in was Pulp Fiction and the actors are John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  First, a few brief sentences about the film that many people call one of the greatest ever made (a simple search on the Internet brings up over 50,000 websites devoted to the movie). Directed by a then unproven Quentin Tarantino, who Roger Ebert calls ' The Jerry Lee Lewis of cinema, a pounding performer who doesn't care if he tears up the piano, as long as everybody is rocking'; (Chicago Sun-Times 10-94) the movie is a combination of several short-stories into a larger story. Tarantino ignores the concept of time, going forwards and backwards in such a way that the ending and the beginning of the movie are almost the same scene. This nonlinear way of shooting, combined with the brilliant acting of Travolta, and Jackson make the film one that can be watched a dozen times, and every time the viewer will take something different away from it. The Has-been   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  John Travolta is an actor whose career has seen as many downs as it has seen ups. An awe-inspiring Hollywood star of the late 70's and early 80's, Travolta was the youngest of six children born to tire salesman and former semi-pro football player Salvatore Travolta and high school drama teacher Helen Travolta on February 18, 1954 in Englewood, NJ. Being the baby of the family, Travolta grew up pampered. The Travolta children were encouraged to be creative, and would stage shows in the basement of their home. By age twelve, John knew he wanted to be an actor, having already joined an acting workshop in his hometown. He soon began appearing in local theater and began taking tap lessons from Gene Kelly's brother Fred. Travolta admits he picked up a lot of moves from TV's Soul Train, and he ascribes his love for dance to the fact that his high school was fifty percent black.

Reason for Returning to School Essay

The reason of why I decided to go back to school and obtain my Bachelor Degree has never been anything out of the ordinary. In today’s society, I see many working adults pursuing their degrees to obtain security and self-fulfillment. While others are looking for the advancement in pay and position in their current or new job. There are even those who need to gain more confidence in their skills to do a good job for their company and they feel that by getting a degree, they can achieve this goal. All of them pertain to me. Especially to today’s current economy, I strongly feel that there is a great advantage to having a degree versus to not having one when it comes to searching for a job. More and more each year, I see new programs for education that are designed for working adults. If there were no real demand for these programs, I believe they would not exist. But that demand is real. There is a larger competitive environment in the work force now then there was a few years ago. With many new and fresh graduates coming out of college, I feel the pressure to increase my credentials to be able to compete. Even though I have built my experience through years of on the job education, I feel that by obtaining a graduate or even undergraduate degree is the only way to secure my position against the growing population of new graduates. I believe that you must continue updating your skills to keep up with this very competitive market. Then, there are those current working adults who are already established in their field, but would like to find a way to increase their potential of getting a raise or promotion. By obtaining a degree, this can show the managers how much value of an employee you are to the company. To have the qualifications and experience can give you a better success rate of getting the raise or promotion that you would ask for. It’s a way of selling yourself and your worth. With a degree, you just are more armed to the task of requesting for an advancement. Once I have obtained my degree, I can then see myself seriously requesting for an advance of my pay and position from my manager. Most importantly is the ability to feel confident in doing your job and to  have that credential to show people. There were many projects that I have been involved in that required myself to learn new skills. One example was learning how to program in Visual Basic 6 to create an interface GUI for one of our robot systems. Another accomplishment that I achieved was generating a database for system files used by our integration department. In almost each project, there were other managers involved besides my own manager. And each one had their doubts in my ability to succeed in the project. I have yet to fail, but each time a new project is started, these doubts from these managers come along with them. Even though I have five-years of experience in my field, I can see that it is harder to prove your ability in your skills with out a four-year degree. It is also much harder to have the confidence in yourself when there are others that lack that confidence in you. That is why I can se e by obtaining a degree can benefit me in many ways besides security and advancement in pay and position. There are times that I try to imagine how different it would be one I have earned my degree. And each time all I can imagine are anything but positive results. Sure, there are concerns and sacrifices that I would need to make down the road. Sacrifice like time. Time with my family and time for myself. But what is a couple of years of sacrifice compared to a lifetime of advancement? I once read an article about a successful businessman and how he achieved his goals by following one philosophy he recited to himself everyday. He believed the reward in terms of happiness is directly proportional to the sacrifice that each one makes. Great philosophy. And I try to live it everyday.
